7. Now what?
The short version
Section titled “The short version”You’re done with setup. Now: post one short hello in #welcome-and-off-topic. That’s the whole assignment. People will reply, you’ll get the feel of how the server works, and you’re a member of the conversation.
Your first message
Section titled “Your first message”Something like this is perfect:
“Hi, I’m [Name] — I run [business or just say what block you’re on]. Looking forward to seeing what’s happening here.”
That’s it. No need to be clever. Other members will reply with a wave, a welcome, or a quick question.
Where to post: #welcome-and-off-topic — it’s the channel everyone sees, and the one we use for introductions.
Worried about what to say? Don’t be. Half of new members write “Hi, I’m Joe from the bakery on Hay Street.” The other half just say “Hi 👋.” Both work.
What to expect in your first week
Section titled “What to expect in your first week”Days 1–2: A few replies to your hello. Some members may DM you to say welcome.
Day 3 onward: You’ll start seeing the rhythm of the server — board members posting announcements in #announcements, neighbors chatting about events in #downtown or #bragg-blvd, the occasional question or flyer in #general-business-discussions.
End of week: You’ll know which channels are worth checking and which to mute. If you set up notifications correctly, Discord shouldn’t be loud — just a quiet inbox you check when you want to.
A few unwritten norms
Section titled “A few unwritten norms”These aren’t rules — just what tends to work in our community:
- Use your real name and business in your profile. Anonymity isn’t useful here — we’re neighbors. The bot adds your business name when you
/link, but you can edit your display name anytime in your Discord settings. - Quick questions go in channels, not DMs. Posting in a channel means other people might answer (and others can learn from the answer too). DM the board only when something is private.
- No promotional spam. Sharing a flyer for your own event = fine and welcome. Posting the same flyer to five channels = not great. One channel is enough.
- Disagreements happen. This is a small community of neighbors who don’t always agree. Argue the point, not the person. The board moderates lightly but firmly.
- It’s OK to be quiet. Many members lurk for weeks before posting anything. That’s fine. Read first, post when you have something to say.
Making Discord part of your week (not your day)
Section titled “Making Discord part of your week (not your day)”You don’t need to be on Discord all day. A good rhythm for most members:
- Once a day (e.g. morning coffee): tap the Mentions button at the bottom to see if anyone tagged you. Takes 30 seconds.
- Once or twice a week: open
#announcementsto see what the board has posted. - When something interests you: jump into
#downtownor#bragg-blvdto read the conversation, reply if you want.
That’s it. Discord doesn’t need to feel like a job.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed
Section titled “If you’re feeling overwhelmed”That’s normal. The first time anyone joins a new app it feels like a lot. Two things help:
- Re-check your notifications — if your phone is buzzing constantly, you didn’t mute the server. Five minutes of setup fixes this forever.
- Ask for help. Mention “Discord overwhelm” in a message to the board and we’ll either walk through what to mute, or pair you with another member who’s been through the same thing.
What’s next
Section titled “What’s next”You’re done with the guide. Go say hi.
Need help? → (only if something didn’t work)
If you get stuck
Section titled “If you get stuck”- Posted a hello and got no replies? That happens sometimes if it’s the middle of the night or a busy week. Wait a day, try again. Or DM a board member directly to say hi.
- Not sure what to post about beyond “hi”? Things members post regularly: events, hiring/looking-for-staff, news clippings about downtown, photos of the corridor, questions about permits.
- Want help in person? Mention it at the next DTA meeting — see Need help? — and a board member will sit with you for 10 minutes.
