4. Quiet down notifications

By default, Discord will buzz your phone every time anyone says anything. That’s too much. Two settings fix it: mute the whole FAYDTA server, then turn on alerts only for direct mentions of you. Five minutes of setup, peace of mind forever.

Other downtown owners are going to chat throughout the day. If you don’t change anything, your phone will buzz every time. That’s why most people give up on Discord — not because it’s complicated, but because it’s loud.

Do these steps once. You won’t have to think about it again.

Section titled “Step 1: Mute the FAYDTA server (recommended for most people)”

Muting doesn’t hide messages — they’re still there when you open Discord. Muting just stops the buzz/ping every time someone posts.

  1. Open Discord and tap into the FAYDTA server.
  2. Tap the server name at the top of the channel list (it says FAYDTA with a small downward arrow).
  3. A menu pops up. Tap Notifications.
  4. Tap Mute Server.
  5. Choose Until I turn it back on.
  6. Done. Tap outside the menu to close it.

Tip: Muting still shows a small dot next to channels with new messages. You’ll see new activity when you open the app — you just won’t be interrupted while it’s happening.

Step 2: Keep getting alerts when someone tags you directly

Section titled “Step 2: Keep getting alerts when someone tags you directly”

You probably do want a notification when someone is talking specifically to you. That’s what @your-name mentions are for, and even with the server muted, mentions can still alert you.

  1. Same menu as above: tap the server name → Notifications.
  2. Set Server Notification Settings to Only @mentions.
  3. Done.

Now:

  • General chatter in any channel → no notification (good)
  • Someone types @your-name in any channel → you get a ping (good)
  • Direct messages → you always get a ping (good)

Step 3 (optional): Get alerts for ONE channel that matters most

Section titled “Step 3 (optional): Get alerts for ONE channel that matters most”

Most members find it useful to be notified about #announcements even if everything else is muted. The board only posts important things there.

  1. Open the channel you want louder (for example, #announcements).
  2. Tap the channel name at the top.
  3. Tap Notifications → choose All Messages.

You can do this for any channel — for example, if you’re a downtown business owner, you might want all messages in #downtown but not in #bragg-blvd.

Same steps work on the Discord app for Mac or Windows. The menu is in the same place — click the server name at the top of the channel list.

What if I want to fully turn off Discord for a while?

Section titled “What if I want to fully turn off Discord for a while?”

You can pause all Discord notifications across the whole app — useful for evenings or weekends.

  1. Tap You at the bottom right of the app.
  2. Tap Notifications.
  3. Tap Pause Notifications.
  4. Choose how long: 15 minutes, 1 hour, 8 hours, or Until I turn them back on.

Your messages still arrive — your phone just won’t buzz.

If you’ve muted but still getting pings, check your phone’s settings (separate from Discord):

Settings → Notifications → Discord → Allow Notifications: leave this on but turn off Sounds and Badges if you want quieter alerts.

Settings → Apps → Discord → Notifications: customize per-category.

Should I uninstall and use the web version instead?

Section titled “Should I uninstall and use the web version instead?”

If you find the app itself a problem (battery drain, too many updates), you can use Discord in a web browser:

  1. Open your phone’s browser.
  2. Go to discord.com.
  3. Log in with your email and password.
  4. Bookmark the page.

The web version works fine but is a bit less responsive. Most people stick with the app.

Now that Discord won’t pester you, the rest is reference material. The next page covers voice and video calls — including how we broadcast public board meetings live for remote attendees.

  • Muting didn’t seem to work? Force-close the app (swipe it away) and reopen.
