1. Install Discord and join FAYDTA
The short version
Section titled “The short version”Three steps: install the app, create a Discord account, accept the FAYDTA invite. About 10 minutes total. Direct download links are below — no hunting through the App Store.
Don’t want another app on your phone? You can skip the install and use Discord in your browser instead. The app is what we recommend for most people because notifications work better, but the browser is fine.
Step 1: Install the Discord app
Section titled “Step 1: Install the Discord app”The app is free and made by Discord (the same company that runs the service). Tap the link for your device:
📱 iPhone or iPad
Section titled “📱 iPhone or iPad”If the link above doesn’t open the App Store, search for Discord in the App Store app — look for the purple speech-bubble icon by Discord, Inc.
📱 Android phone or tablet
Section titled “📱 Android phone or tablet”If the link doesn’t open Google Play, search for Discord in the Play Store — look for the purple speech-bubble icon by Discord Inc.
That link downloads a file called Discord.dmg. Open it from your Downloads folder, then drag the Discord icon into your Applications folder.
Works on macOS 11 (Big Sur) and later.
💻 Windows
Section titled “💻 Windows”That link downloads DiscordSetup.exe. Open it from your Downloads folder and Discord installs itself in a couple of minutes.
If you have a newer Windows on ARM device (uncommon but possible on some Surface and Snapdragon laptops): Windows ARM version
💻 Linux
Section titled “💻 Linux”👉 Download Discord for Linux (.deb for Debian / Ubuntu)
Or .tar.gz for other distributions.
Step 2: Create a Discord account
Section titled “Step 2: Create a Discord account”The first time you open Discord, it asks you to either log in or register.
- Tap Register (or Sign Up).
- Use your real email address. If you’ve registered with the DTA before, use the same email you get DTA meeting notices on — it makes linking your account easier later.
- Pick a password you’ll remember. Discord requires at least 8 characters.
- For your display name, you can use your real name or your business name. This is what people in FAYDTA will see. You can change it later.
- Discord will send you a verification email. Open your email app, find the message from Discord, and tap the verification button. Then come back to Discord.
About the birthday question: Discord is legally required to ask. They only use it to confirm you’re over 18. Give your real birthday — it’s not shared with anyone, including DTA.
Step 3: Join the FAYDTA server
Section titled “Step 3: Join the FAYDTA server”There are two ways to get the invite. Either works.
The easy way: visit faydta.com/discord
Section titled “The easy way: visit faydta.com/discord”That short link sends you straight to our Discord invite. Easy to remember, easy to share by word of mouth.
Or use the direct Discord invite
Section titled “Or use the direct Discord invite”Either way, what happens next
Section titled “Either way, what happens next”- Tap the link.
- It opens Discord automatically.
- If your phone asks “Open in Discord app?” — say yes.
- You’ll see a preview of the FAYDTA server. Tap Accept Invite (or Join Server).
- Discord may show a small puzzle to prove you’re not a robot (called a CAPTCHA — just tap the box). Solve it if it appears.
You’re now in. Welcome.
What happens next
Section titled “What happens next”The first thing you’ll see is a list of channels (group conversations). It can look busy. Don’t worry — you don’t need to read everything. The next page shows you how to find your way around.
Next: 2. Get around in Discord →
Alternative: use Discord in a browser (no install)
Section titled “Alternative: use Discord in a browser (no install)”If you’d rather not install another app, Discord works in any web browser:
Bookmark that page on your phone or computer. You’ll log in with your email and password the same way (Step 2 above still applies). Then visit faydta.com/discord to join.
Trade-off: the browser version works on every device, but you won’t get push notifications when the browser is closed. For most people we recommend the app.
If you get stuck
Section titled “If you get stuck”- A download link didn’t work? Try opening the link on the device you want Discord installed on — desktop links don’t make sense from a phone. If a link looks broken on this page, tell the board and we’ll fix it.
- The app won’t install? Make sure your phone has space (Discord needs about 200 MB).
- Verification email never arrived? Check your spam/junk folder. If still nothing, log back into Discord and ask for a new one.
- Invite link says “expired” or “invalid”? Try faydta.com/discord — it always points to the current invite, even if a specific
discord.gg/...link has been rotated. - Want help in person? Mention it at the next DTA meeting — see Need help? — and a board member will sit with you and your phone for 10 minutes.
- Still stuck? See the Need Help page.
